College of Pharmacy Faculty and Students Publish Review Article in International Peer-Reviewed Journal

College of Pharmacy Faculty and Students Publish Review Article in International Peer-Reviewed Journal
May 6, 2026

The College of Pharmacy at Dubai Medical University (DMU) announces the publication of a review article by faculty members and undergraduate pharmacy students in Biomaterials Translational, an internationally recognized peer-reviewed journal at the forefront of translational medicine and biomaterials science.

The article, titled “Cubosomes as smart nanocarriers for antimicrobial agents: A review of emerging applications,” was authored by Prof. Bazigha K. Abdul Rasool and Prof. Aliasgar Shahiwala from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, alongside undergraduate pharmacy students Raneem Zakaria and Nour Hijazi.

The review explores cubosomes — an innovative class of lipid-based nanoparticles — and their promising role in delivering antimicrobial agents. Unlike conventional drug carriers, cubosomes possess a highly ordered internal structure that allows them to efficiently encapsulate a wide range of drug types while providing sustained and controlled release. The article highlights the potential of these advanced nanocarriers to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal drugs, and to overcome major challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, rapid drug degradation, and poor drug permeability. The review also discusses their ability to disrupt biofilms and improve targeted drug delivery, alongside current limitations in large-scale manufacturing and storage stability that must be addressed before clinical translation.

The article is available open access at:
