DMU MPharm Graduate Releases Research in Q2 Scopus-Indexed Journal

DMU MPharm Graduate Releases Research in Q2 Scopus-Indexed Journal
February 10, 2026

DUBAI (March 11, 2026) – Dubai Medical University – College of Pharmacy announces the publication of a research article authored  by Ms. Zainab Almardod, a recent graduate of the Master of Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy Specialization) program, in the Q2, Scopus-indexed journal Critical Care Research and Practice.

The article, titled “Prevalence, Risk Factors, Characteristics, and Clinical Outcomes of Thrombocytopenia in the Intensive Care Unit: A Prospective Single-Center Cohort Study”, was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Kishore Gnana Sam, a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the college.

This prospective cohort study enrolled 276 critically ill patients in a tertiary intensive care unit and investigated the epidemiology and clinical impact of thrombocytopenia. The study reported a prevalence of 38.8% and an incidence of new-onset thrombocytopenia of 22.5%. Importantly, new-onset thrombocytopenia was found to be independently associated with major bleeding and increased ICU mortality. The research also identified key predictors, including shock, sepsis, and renal impairment, and highlighted medication-related factors associated with severe thrombocytopenia.

The study contributes valuable epidemiological data from the Gulf region, where ICU-related thrombocytopenia has been underrepresented in the literature. Its findings provide clinically relevant insights that may support improved risk stratification, monitoring, and management strategies in critical care settings.

This publication reflects the strong research component embedded within the MPharm (Clinical Pharmacy Specialization) program, which emphasizes methodological rigor, advanced statistical analysis, and clinically meaningful outcomes. It also demonstrates the college’s commitment to cultivating postgraduate students capable of producing high-quality, practice-oriented research that contributes to evidence-based patient care.
